What is an Ad Map?

An ad map is a document that describes all the different pages of your website and which ad slots appear on each page. While not required, developing an ad map is a helpful preparatory step to ensure a successful implementation. It serves as a reference document to describe the intended behavior of ad each slot, can be sent do SSPs when requesting Header Bidding IDs, and can be used to perform bulk operations, such as adding/removing/updating 100s of ad slots at once.

An ad map is typically an Excel document, with the following info:

  • list of the different page types on your website
  • list of the different ad slots that appear on each page type
    • ad unit name
    • ad sizes (including responsive sizes)
    • slot-specific behaviors, such as lazy-load or refresh
  • any conditional logic
    • ex: a slot may only be visible to logged-in users
